Man’s eye ripped out in unprovoked attack from stranger on Phoenix street

PHOENIX, AZ – A Phoenix man has been charged with felony aggravated assault following a shocking attack near 48th Street and Broadway Road, where he allegedly assaulted a stranger without provocation. Police report that Daniel Lanks, 39, approached a passerby from behind and forcibly removed the individual’s eyeball after an innocent exchange of pleasantries.

Court documents reveal that the victim, who had merely asked Lanks, “How are you doing?” feared for his life during the violent encounter. Lanks is accused of further assaulting the man by delivering blows to his face, which resulted in a fractured jaw.

The victim has asserted that the injuries sustained during the attack have significantly impaired his ability to see out of his right eye, profoundly affecting his daily life and potentially his ability to work.

The altercation occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 14, as detailed in police reports. Initial interactions seemed benign; however, after the victim’s greeting, Lanks allegedly threatened him before carrying out the brutal attack. Law enforcement officials noted that the assault was entirely unprovoked, with the victim neither making threats nor brandishing any weapon.

Following his arrest, Lanks reportedly exhibited defiance towards investigators. The court documents mention that after being read his rights, Lanks became belligerent, refusing to comply with questioning.

This violent incident is not Lanks’ first brush with the law. Just a week prior, he had been released on his own recognizance for a separate charge involving aggravated assault and organized retail theft. Currently, he remains in custody with bail set at $500,000.

As the legal proceedings continue, no information has been released concerning a potential court date. Meanwhile, the victim continues to grapple with the long-term impacts of the attack, which may include permanent loss of function and an uncertain future regarding employment capabilities.

The community remains on alert as authorities manage this troubling case, highlighting broader concerns about random acts of violence in the area. Public awareness and vigilance are being encouraged to ensure safety and support for those affected by similar incidents.
