Memorial Concert Raises Over $1,000 for Families of UCCS Shooting Victims

Colorado Springs, CO – Sunshine Studios in Security-Widefield became a hub for music and remembrance on Friday night as local bands gathered to honor Celie Montgomery and Sam Knopp, the two individuals who lost their lives in a tragic shooting at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in February. The fundraising memorial concert drew hundreds of attendees as the community came together to celebrate the lives of these two individuals through music.

One of the highlights of the event was a debut performance by Aeternum, a band formed by former bandmates of Knopp. Knopp, a young musician who was pursuing a music major at UCCS, played a significant role in the development of the hard rock band, leaving a lasting impact on his peers with his skilled technical guitar playing and passion for music.

Former bandmate Jose Tinajero fondly recalled Knopp’s electrifying presence on stage, describing him as a talented guitarist with a love for the classics. Knopp’s joy and enthusiasm for playing music were evident to everyone who knew him, leaving a lasting impression on the local music community.

The memorial concert not only provided a platform for music and remembrance but also served as a fundraising event for the families of Montgomery and Knopp. Through ticket sales, a raffle, and the sale of commemorative T-shirts bearing the message “legends never die,” over $1,000 was raised to support the families during their time of need.

Among the attendees were Knopp’s parents, who expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. The event not only honored the memory of their son but also showcased the tight-knit music scene in Colorado Springs, where musicians come together to support one another in times of loss and celebration.

Lead singer Kayla Smith of Aeternum emphasized the closeness of the music community in Colorado Springs, highlighting the interconnectedness and support system that exists among musicians. The event also drew musicians like Nikki Z from the band Misconduct, who felt honored to participate in paying tribute to Knopp and Montgomery, despite the somber nature of the occasion.

Overall, the memorial concert at Sunshine Studios served as a poignant reminder of the power of music to bring people together in times of sorrow, as the community rallied around the memories of Celie Montgomery and Sam Knopp, ensuring that their legacies will live on through the notes and rhythms of the local music scene.
