Memphis man tries to escape girlfriend as she repeatedly runs over him with SUV

MEMPHIS, TN – Chaos unfolded on a quiet Memphis street Saturday morning after authorities say a woman used her SUV as a weapon in a violent confrontation with her former boyfriend, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

Police allege that Tanieka Ray, 39, repeatedly struck her ex-boyfriend with her vehicle during a chilling encounter in the 500 block of Gilleas Road around 11:30 a.m. The victim, whose name has not been released, was found critically injured after what witnesses described as a relentless attack.

The incident began when Ray and the victim reportedly became embroiled in a heated exchange outside a neighbor’s home. As the confrontation escalated, the man tried to flee, only to slip and fall in the neighbor’s yard. Authorities say Ray accelerated her SUV onto the property, striking him. She is accused of reversing and driving over the man several more times as he attempted to escape.

Hearing the disturbance, a nearby resident looked out to see the harrowing scene unfold. According to police, Ray was seen making several U-turns on the street, shouting explicit threats at the man while maneuvering her vehicle toward him. The neighbor told authorities he heard her threaten to finish the job before ultimately speeding away from the area.

After the final strike, the neighbor hurried to assist the victim, finding him slumped against a fence. The resident moved the injured man onto his porch for safety and dialed 911. Emergency responders arrived minutes later, rushing the critically wounded man to a local hospital, where he required immediate surgery for multiple fractures and dislocations.

Ray did not remain at the scene, according to investigators. Her SUV, damaged from the ordeal, reportedly crashed into a nearby utility pole as she attempted to make her getaway. Police say she then abandoned her vehicle and fled on foot.

Several hours later, officers located Ray at a residence in south Memphis, approximately six miles from the original scene. She was taken into custody without incident. Police conducted a suspect lineup, during which the neighbor identified Ray as the driver responsible for the attack.

Ray faces an attempted first-degree murder charge and remained in custody over the weekend. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the altercation.

Detectives have not disclosed what prompted the violent encounter between Ray and her former partner. No additional injuries or property damage were reported in relation to the incident.

The victim is expected to face a lengthy recovery from his injuries. Police have not indicated whether further charges may be filed as their investigation progresses.
