MIAMI, FL – A Miami man is facing a second-degree murder charge after authorities say he fatally shot his wife’s lover during a heated confrontation in a busy flea market parking lot.
Omar Rene Aguila, 69, was taken into custody Thursday after investigators determined he shot and killed a man with whom his wife had been in a long-term relationship. The fatal encounter happened July 12 at the Northside Shopping Center, police said.
According to investigative records, Aguila’s wife began an affair with the victim in 2019. Aguila reportedly only learned about the extramarital relationship in April. Relatives said Aguila urged his wife to end the romance, but tensions escalated when the victim appeared at Aguila’s residence for a confrontation just two days before the deadly shooting.
On the morning of the incident, Aguila was at the flea market accompanied by his wife and their son. The victim arrived at the same shopping center to deliver food to a friend and attempted to speak with Aguila’s wife, according to police accounts.
What followed was a confrontation in the victim’s parked car. Authorities said an argument quickly turned violent when Aguila produced a firearm and fired multiple rounds at the other man. Security cameras in the parking lot reportedly captured the entire shooting, aiding detectives in piecing together critical details.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the wounded man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials have not yet made his name public.
In the immediate aftermath, police released Aguila from custody after he claimed the shooting had been in self-defense. Aguila told officers he believed the victim was armed, asserting the presence of a gun in the victim’s vehicle. However, further investigation did not corroborate this claim, with detectives stating the victim was unarmed during the confrontation.
In addition to the murder accusation, Aguila faces charges for illegal possession of a firearm due to his prior felony conviction, authorities said. As a convicted felon, Aguila is barred under state and federal law from owning or carrying a gun.
Aguila is currently being held without bail at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He is scheduled to appear in court for his next hearing on Monday, where additional details concerning the case are expected to be disclosed.
The shooting has prompted renewed conversation among residents in the area about safety at public gathering spots. Police have not announced any further arrests in the ongoing homicide investigation.
Detectives continue to gather evidence and urge anyone with additional information about the case to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers.
