Traverse City, Michigan, was shaken when a man reportedly entered a Walmart and allegedly stabbed 11 shoppers in a random attack on Saturday afternoon. Bradford Gille, a resident of Afton, is now facing charges including one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder, according to local authorities.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea indicated that the motivation behind the attack is still unclear. Gille, who has a history of prior assaults and drug-related offenses, did not comment during his arrest. The swift actions of bystanders, who detained Gille in the parking lot before law enforcement arrived, are credited with preventing further harm. Sheriff Shea noted that police were on the scene in just three minutes following the first emergency calls.
Shea emphasized the rapid response time, stating that Gille was taken into custody within one minute of officers’ arrival. “I cannot commend everyone involved enough,” he said at a press briefing. The community’s quick reaction was essential in ensuring that more individuals were not injured.
Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg clarified the reasoning behind the terrorism charges. She explained that the attack’s impact on the community warranted such charges, as it was designed to instill fear throughout the area rather than to target specific individuals. “It’s something done to affect the entire community, to put fear in the entire community and to change how maybe we operate on a daily basis,” she noted.
Among the victims, who ranged in age from 29 to 84, included both men and women, as well as a Walmart employee. From the information provided by Munson Medical Center, one victim was treated and released, while two were reported to be in serious condition. The remainder of the victims is in fair condition, and all are expected to survive.
Witness accounts reflect the chaos of the incident. Steven Carter, who observed the attack while loading his truck, described the scene as surreal. He noted that a group of bystanders confronted Gille, urging him to drop the weapon. “At first, it was disbelief. I thought maybe it was like a terror attack,” he recounted. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in Gille being subdued by the crowd before police could intervene.
Another bystander, Tiffany DeFell, recounted the panic surrounding her. “It was really scary. This is something you see out of movies. It’s not what you expect to see where you’re living,” she said. The apprehension felt by everyday shoppers was palpable.
Sheriff Shea stated that the weapon used was a folding knife and confirmed that the choice of victims appeared random. Law enforcement officials, including the FBI, responded promptly to assist in the ongoing investigation. Walmart, in response to the incident, announced that employees would receive pay while the store remains closed and that counseling services are being offered.
