FENTON, MO – A Missouri man is facing charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action after admitting to fatally shooting his wife because he was overwhelmed by the responsibility of her care. Police arrested Kenneth Pautler, 73, who allegedly confessed to the murder of Karen Pautler, 75, in their Fenton home.
Authorities were called to the couple’s residence in the St. Louis suburb around 2:15 p.m. Friday. Upon arrival, deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were greeted by Kenneth Pautler, who guided them to the scene of the incident inside the home.
There, they discovered Karen Pautler dead from a gunshot wound in a bedroom.
The tragedy stems from Kenneth’s admission that he could no longer handle the care of his wife, who reportedly suffered from mental health issues.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Kenneth admitted to using a firearm to take his wife’s life, stating he felt it was his duty as he did not wish for her to end up in institutional care.
The affidavit reveals that Kenneth, contemplating the act for several days, wanted to ensure his wife’s death was as humane as possible. He allegedly selected a specific ammunition type and aimed with precision to ensure a quick death, underscoring the tragic premeditation of the act.
Law enforcement officials expressed concern over Kenneth’s mental state, as he reportedly made statements about no longer wishing to live and wanting to join his wife in death. These statements have raised flags about his intention to appear in court.
Kenneth Pautler currently remains in custody at the Jefferson County Jail. Details regarding his legal representation or the scheduling of his court appearance have not been disclosed. As the Pautler investigation continues, the community grapples with the disturbing case that brings to light the struggles faced by caregivers of those with chronic illnesses.
