Orillia, Ontario — A mother is urging local officials and law enforcement to enhance public safety following a shocking assault on her son at Couchiching Beach Park. Holly Hodgson is speaking out about the emotional and physical toll the May 26 incident has had on her family, emphasizing the need for accountability and increased safety measures in the community.
Her son, 24-year-old Jordan Duffy, suffered significant injuries during the attack, which has left residents feeling uneasy and frightened. A disturbing video shared on social media captured the violent altercation, showing a group of youths surrounding Duffy before he was struck in the head and repeatedly beaten until he became unconscious.
Hodgson explained that her son was merely trying to help when he intervened in what he perceived to be an assault on a young girl near the Rotary Aqua Theatre. “All he said was, ‘Two on one isn’t fair,’” she recalled. Instead of de-escalating the situation, the youths followed him, ultimately launching the brutal attack.
As a result of the assault, Duffy suffered multiple severe injuries, including gashes to his head that risked his life. Doctors informed Hodgson that had it not been for a bystander applying pressure to stop the bleeding, Duffy could have died within minutes. Now reliant on crutches and a leg brace, he is adjusting to a new reality filled with pain and anxiety.
In the aftermath of the incident, local resident Chris Landra came to Duffy’s aid, applying makeshift bandages and keeping him conscious until emergency responders arrived. Despite being hailed as a hero, Landra remains humble, stating that the community needs to equip its youth with basic first-aid knowledge to better respond in emergencies.
Orillia Mayor Don McIsaac expressed his outrage over the incident, describing the behavior displayed in the video as unacceptable. He has reached out to both Duffy and Hodgson, offering support and working with local authorities to improve safety measures in public spaces. McIsaac confirmed that action is being taken, including the exploration of additional patrols and surveillance.
While several arrests have been made connected to the assault, Hodgson expressed frustration with the lack of communication from law enforcement. She stated that she learned about the suspects’ release on social media and felt compelled to share evidence directly with police. “It shouldn’t be this hard to seek justice for your child,” she said.
The assault has also impacted Duffy’s younger brothers, with one becoming withdrawn and the other living in constant fear. The family now feels unsafe in their own home, leading Hodgson to lock doors and remain vigilant. “It used to feel safe here,” she lamented. “Now I worry every time someone walks by.”
Hodgson is calling for greater accountability from those responsible for the violence. “These kids need to understand the gravity of their actions,” she said. “It could have ended much worse than it did.” She is also advocating for increased police presence in public parks, recalling a time when officers were more involved in community engagement.
Landra echoed these sentiments, urging the community to not only demand safety but to foster educational programs that prepare young people to react appropriately in crises. “We have to do better,” he asserted, emphasizing the importance of being proactive rather than reactive.
