MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – A mother in northwestern Canada is speaking out about how her daughter’s 2022 suicide attempt should have prompted Ontario police to investigate Kenneth Law, an alleged poison seller believed to be linked to multiple deaths. The mother, who has chosen to remain anonymous, claims that her daughter’s near-fatal experience could have potentially prevented further fatalities if law enforcement had taken her plea for an investigation seriously.
According to the mother, she requested the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to look into the matter following her daughter’s suicide attempt in April 2022, but instead of investigating, the police allegedly questioned her. She is convinced that the police’s lack of action cost multiple lives.
Law, who hails from Mississauga, Ontario, was arrested last month and charged with counselling or aiding suicide in connection with two deaths in Toronto’s suburbs. The investigation, spanning 11 Ontario police agencies along with international authorities, is looking into the suspicion that Law’s businesses distributed and marketed a potentially lethal substance to individuals at risk of self-harm.
The mother alleges that the OPP seized an envelope used to mail the poison after her daughter’s incident in 2022 but only approached her again last month, showing a lack of urgency in their response. She has provided police with crucial evidence, including a credit card receipt linking Law’s activities to the substance’s purchase.
In addition, she asserts that officers dismissed her daughter’s close call as an opioid overdose, further delaying a more thorough investigation. Despite her persistent efforts to alert law enforcement, the mother felt her concerns were not taken seriously.
Six of the deaths connected to Law’s products occurred in the year between her daughter’s suicide attempt and Law’s eventual arrest. Families and victims alike believe that a more proactive response from law enforcement might have prevented these tragic deaths.
Through her experience, the mother hopes to shed light on the need for law enforcement to take reports of potentially dangerous activities more seriously and to act swiftly to prevent further harm.
