HOUSTON, Texas – A Houston man is facing murder charges after allegedly coaching a 16-year-old through a robbery that resulted in the teenager’s death, according to police. The teen, identified as Edwin Quinones, was found shot and later died in an elevator at the Haven at Elgin apartments on Dec. 12.
Larry Holmes, 18, has been charged in connection with Quinones’ death, even though he was not present during the robbery. Police reported that the teen died while attempting to rob two men at gunpoint in an elevator and was shot during the struggle that ensued.
Police revealed that they have evidence showing Holmes and Quinones were in communication during the robbery, though specifics were not provided. Holmes was charged with felony murder through the Texas “law of parties,” which makes each person involved in a crime responsible as a “party” to the offense.
The law states that each individual involved in a crime is responsible for the offense, and in this case, Holmes was charged with felony murder because he encouraged Quinones to carry out the crime. Carmen Roe, a legal analyst, stated that Holmes is also legally responsible for the crime resulting in death.
The person who shot Quinones is unlikely to face charges, as their actions may be considered self-defense. Holmes was already facing three prior felony charges in Harris County and is being held on a $275,000 bond.
Residents living at Haven on Elgin reported that gunfire is unfortunately a common occurrence at the apartment complex, with one resident expressing concern over the death of Quinones and the prevalence of gunshots in the area. Holmes is expected to appear in court again on Jan. 4.
