DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities from the Dekalb County District Attorney’s office have expressed doubts about their ability to conclusively determine who was responsible for the death of Brandon Veal. Veal tragically lost his life on August 6, 2022, while visiting a friend’s residence with his girlfriend and her three-year-old son.
Initial reports indicate that after exchanging greetings with friends, Veal returned to his car with his girlfriend and her son. Shortly thereafter, witnesses reported hearing a gunshot. The devastating loss of Veal has left his mother, Allison Woodard, shattered and seeking justice for her beloved son.
Amid the confusion surrounding the incident, Veal’s girlfriend claimed that her three-year-old child had accidentally fired the fatal shot while sitting in Veal’s lap. However, a detailed coroner’s report revealed that the bullet had entered through Veal’s right temple, suggesting that the weapon was discharged from the passenger side of the vehicle.
Despite the girlfriend’s initial arrest on murder charges, the Dekalb County District Attorney’s office ultimately decided not to pursue formal legal action in the case. In a statement, Claire Simms Chaffins, Director of Communications for the office, expressed condolences to Veal’s family while explaining the challenges faced in prosecuting the case due to insufficient evidence and lack of credible witnesses.
