FERGUSON, Mo. — St. Louis County police have determined that the tragic house fire that claimed the lives of a family of five was a murder-suicide. The fire took place early Monday morning at a residence on the 500 block of North Clay Avenue.
Bernadine Pruessner, also known as “Birdie,” was found deceased in the aftermath of the fire, along with her four children: 2-year-old Millie, 6-year-old Jackson, and 9-year-old twin girls Ellie and Ivy. The St. Louis County Police Department revealed that their preliminary investigation indicated Pruessner intentionally set a mattress on fire and left a note expressing her desire to end her and her children’s lives.
Jared Spader, the father of Jackson and Millie, along with David Pruessner, the father of Ellie and Ivy, released a poignant statement in honor of their beloved children. They described their children as loving and vibrant, emphasizing the immeasurable joy and love they brought to their lives. They expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community and emphasized their commitment to honoring the memory of their children.
Nathan Cohen, an attorney who had represented Bernadine Pruessner, also shared a statement on behalf of her family.
