Murdered Innocent Man’s Family Seeks Justice as Killer Is Sentenced to 18 Years

Rochester, New York – A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for the murder of Sayyos Rios, an innocent victim killed in a drive-by shooting while sitting on his porch last July. Rios, who was not the intended target, tragically lost his life in front of his home on North Union Street.

The sentencing of Teodoro Rivera Jr. for Rios’ murder was delivered by Monroe County Judge Douglas Randall. In addition to the murder conviction, Rivera was also sentenced to 15 years in prison for criminal possession of a weapon, with an additional five years of post-release supervision.

Despite the legal outcome, Rios’ family continues to grapple with the pain of their loss. Rios’ brother, Luis Perez, expressed frustration over the sentencing, questioning whether a potential parole in the future would truly lead to reform for Rivera. The family has been vocal about their desire for justice and closure following the senseless death of Rios.

Assistant District Attorney Anthony Freeman acknowledged Rivera’s admission of guilt in the shooting, but emphasized that nothing can undo the devastation caused by his actions. The impact of Rios’ death extends beyond just him; it affects his family, loved ones, and the community as a whole.

In court, Perez detailed the lack of remorse displayed by Rios’ killer, further highlighting the pain endured by the family. Despite the challenges they have faced since Rios’ murder, the family remains grateful for the efforts of the Rochester Police Department and the prosecution in holding the perpetrator accountable.

The incident, which also injured a 19-year-old man who was the intended target of the shooting, serves as a stark reminder of the lasting consequences of gun violence. Rios’ family continues to mourn his loss and navigate the difficult process of healing in the wake of this tragedy.

As they reflect on the impact of Rios’ death, the family hopes that justice served will prevent future families from experiencing the profound grief they have endured. Moving forward, they focus on honoring Rios’ memory and finding solace through their faith and unity.
