NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A violent incident at Centennial Park has left local residents questioning their safety at one of Nashville’s most iconic venues. A man was severely injured on Thursday night, leading to increased anxiety among park visitors.
The altercation occurred shortly after 9 p.m., when a witness reported a brutal attack at the Parthenon replica located in the park. According to police, the victim was approached by a man who asked him to play music. When the victim declined, the assailant allegedly threatened his life, forcefully slamming him to the ground and against a metal post multiple times, rendering him unconscious.
Justin Cunningham has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident. Police stated that he appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the attack. During his transport to jail, Cunningham allegedly directed death threats at the officers involved in his arrest.
The shocking attack has left regular visitors to Centennial Park feeling unsettled. Jeriah Summeour, a frequent morning walker, expressed her concerns about her safety after the incident. “It makes me a little nervous, but it just reminds me to stay hyper-vigilant and aware of my surroundings,” she said.
Rodrigo Alves, a recent transplant to the area, echoed Summeour’s sentiments. He indicated that he plans to carry pepper spray and remain more cautious during his visits to the park. “I need to be safe and look around more often,” Alves commented.
Herndon Meins, a long-time Nashville resident, also shared his feelings of unease. “It definitely makes me a little more cautious,” he noted, suggesting he may consider carrying a form of self-defense, such as a knife.
In light of this incident, safety experts are advising visitors to avoid walking alone, remain aware of their surroundings, and consider carrying protective items. As the investigation continues, the Nashville community grapples with the implications of this attack on its sense of security in public spaces.
