VERA, OK – In a rural Oklahoma community, a judge delivered hefty prison sentences to a couple found guilty of a harrowing child abuse case involving a 15-year-old girl restrained to a tree for three days.
Johnny James, 41, was sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to child abuse and neglect, while his partner, Kayla Clark, 42, received a 30-year sentence for child neglect and enabling abuse. The sentencing marked a significant moment for the victim, now residing with a foster family, as she gave a powerful victim impact statement.
The distressing incident emerged when Washington County deputies responded to a child abuse report on July 28 in the small town of Vera, located about 25 miles north of Tulsa. A caller had alerted authorities about a teenage girl in dire need of medical attention, citing her deteriorating condition and the prolonged time she had been restrained. According to police records, the girl, whose family was visiting from Texas, was discovered near a shed and chicken coop, attached to a ratchet-style strap and suffering from various injuries.
Initially hesitant, a witness identified by the victim as her caregiver eventually informed officers that she was aware of the abuse but feared retribution from James. Upon his arrival, James confessed to the restraint, claiming it was necessary because the girl was untrustworthy and prone to lying. He admitted to tying her down on two separate occasions, insisting it was only for short periods when he left for errands.
James asserted that the teenager’s behavioral issues were linked to her wish to reunite with her mother. During questioning, he acknowledged the need for alternative disciplinary measures beyond physically restraining her.
Clark, on the other hand, denied involvement, stating she was unaware of the actions as she was preoccupied with household responsibilities. Despite her pleas of ignorance, the court held her accountable for facilitating the abuse.
The grisly discovery spurred immediate medical intervention, with first responders rushing the victim to a hospital. Concurrently, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services assumed custody of the girl and other minors found in the home—a stark reminder of the complex challenges faced by vulnerable children in the foster care system.
