CONCORD, CA — A tragic confrontation unfolded in the early hours of February 18, when Concord police fatally shot a 47-year-old man, Nathan Keesler, after he was observed stabbing his father with a large kitchen knife. The incident, which erupted inside a residential home on Natoma Boulevard, also left Keesler’s father wounded from both the stabbing and accidental gunfire.
The distressing scenario began to unravel around 1:40 a.m., prompted by an emergency call from Keesler’s mother, who alerted authorities to the violent altercation involving her husband and son. Upon arrival, officers encountered a grave scene, necessitating immediate and decisive action to prevent further harm.
Body camera footage from the responding officers captured the intense moments of the encounter. Sgt. Christopher Souza and Officer Roy Olson were the first on scene. The recordings show Olson issuing commands for Keesler to drop the weapon. Despite multiple commands, Keesler continued his assault, leading Olson to discharge his firearm, while Souza deployed a Taser.
The critical situation escalated quickly, with additional officers, including Corporal David Padilla and Officers David Rodriguez and Keny Rodriguez, arriving at the scene. In total, the police fired 20 rounds in three separate exchanges as the violent encounter unfolded.
The initial volley of gunfire incapacitated Keesler momentarily, but the confrontation did not end there. As Olson approached to neutralize the threat definitively, Keesler, still armed, attempted to slash at Olson. Olson evaded injury, and further rounds were fired, alongside another deployment of a Taser, to subdue Keesler.
A third and final sequence of gunfire occurred as officers tried to secure the scene and provide aid to Keesler’s father. Tragically, one of the bullets fired during the police response inadvertently struck the already injured elder Keesler, who had sustained multiple stab wounds. He survived the ordeal, however, thanks to immediate medical attention and subsequent hospital treatment.
Throughout this harrowing episode, the officers involved were compelled to make split-second decisions under extreme stress, a testament to the unpredictable and dangerous nature of law enforcement interventions in domestic violence cases.
