Peace Talks in Gombe Turned Ambush: Police Chief Assaulted Amid Rising Tensions

Kwadon, Nigeria — A peace meeting intended to resolve tensions among rival factions of the Kalare group erupted into violence, leading to a serious assault on the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kwadon Division, CSP Adamu Alhaji-Idi. The ordeal unfolded during a reconciliation effort that spiraled out of control, resulting in a coordinated attack on the police official.

Community sources indicate that the atmosphere turned hostile as discussions progressed, with suspected members of the Kalare group launching an unexpected assault on the DPO. Subsequently, CSP Alhaji-Idi sustained multiple injuries, including a significant laceration to his forehead, and was transported to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe for treatment.

In connection with the incident, law enforcement has apprehended 25 individuals believed to be linked to the attack. A village head was reportedly detained following the disappearance of his son, who is suspected of orchestrating the violence. Gombe State Police Command has made clear its commitment to holding those responsible accountable.

Police spokesperson DSP Buhari Abdullahi confirmed the details of the assault, stating that a distress call was received around 9 a.m. from the Deputy Commissioner of Police. Officers from Operation Hattara were swiftly dispatched to the location, leading to the arrest of the suspects, all residents of Kwadon.

Abdullahi emphasized the determination of the police to ensure justice, revealing that the arrested individuals will face charges following a thorough investigation. The command is currently focused on maintaining public safety amid this unsettling incident.

The severity of the assault prompted high-ranking officials, including Commissioner of Police Bello Yahaya and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, to visit Kwadon and assess the situation firsthand. Their visit underscored a commitment to addressing the rising violence against law enforcement and reassuring the community of the police’s dedication to restoring order.

DSP Abdullahi reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards aggression against police personnel, asserting that those who undermine public safety will face stringent consequences. He urged residents to support ongoing investigations and to avoid actions that could destabilize the community further.

The police command is confident that with community cooperation, the cycle of violence targeting security personnel will end. Authorities aim to ensure that justice is not only sought but visibly delivered in the pursuit of peace and safety in Gombe State.
