Pennsylvania man hates girlfriend’s 4-month-old baby because she’s not his and beats her to death

HARRISBURG, PA – A Pennsylvania man and woman are facing serious charges after authorities allege their negligence and abuse led to the death of their 4-month-old daughter.

Police responded to a call on March 28 regarding an infant in cardiac arrest at an apartment located on Wakefield Road in Susquehanna Township. The child, Ioni Souders, was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according to law enforcement officials.

Initial claims by the child’s mother, Layla Souders, 20, implicated herself in the child’s injuries, suggesting she accidentally dropped the baby. However, police rejected this narrative after an investigation revealed the infant had suffered a severe compound fracture in the right femur, alongside broken ribs and multiple fractures in her skull. Additional injuries were found on the brain, neck, and chest, suggesting a pattern of frequent and severe abuse.

Souders eventually recanted her story, stating her boyfriend, Jose Melendez Padilla, 24, was the true perpetrator of these horrific acts. According to court documents, she confessed to fabricating the story about the accident to cover for Melendez Padilla, who she said had been abusing Ioni since February.

Further investigation uncovered damning evidence against Melendez Padilla, including text messages expressing hatred toward the child. In one exchange, he suggested to Souders that Ioni should be put up for adoption if she continued living with them. The messages depicted increasing resentment from Melendez Padilla, even admitting to an incident where he struck the baby hard enough to render her unconscious.

Disturbingly, Melendez Padilla also searched online for methods to manage the child’s injuries at home, avoiding professional medical assistance altogether.

Both suspects have been arrested and are facing numerous charges. Melendez Padilla is charged with first-degree murder along with multiple counts related to child abuse and evidence tampering. Souders faces charges of third-degree murder, as well as endangering the welfare of a child and tampering with evidence.

Authorities have also discovered that Melendez Padilla is living in the United States illegally. His immigration status has added further complexity to the case, sparking additional charges concerning false identification documentation.

Currently held without bond in Dauphin County Prison, the couple is set to make their first court appearance on Thursday. Investigators continue to pore over the details of the case as they prepare to bring justice for Ioni Souders.
