BOCA RATON, Fla. — A tragic incident occurred Monday when a small Cessna 310 aircraft, enroute to Tallahassee from Boca Raton Airport, crashed in Boca Raton shortly after takeoff, killing three passengers and injuring a bystander. The crash resulted in a fiery explosion on Military Trail, prompting immediate response from emergency services.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the crash occurred at approximately 10:12 a.m., following the pilot’s attempt to return to the airport due to mechanical issues. The aircraft experienced difficulties that led to its descent onto train tracks west of Interstate 95, near Town Center Mall.
Boca Raton Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Michael LaSalle reported that their units were dispatched immediately after receiving calls about the aircraft’s troubles. The emergency teams arrived to find the plane engulfed in flames upon impact with the ground.
According to Boca Raton Fire Rescue, the crash did not affect the nearby vehicular traffic directly, though resulting fireballs and debris spread across the road. The injured individual was a motorist whose vehicle encountered a fireball and subsequently collided with a tree. Fortunately, the person’s injuries were reported as non-life threatening.
Mayor Scott Singer addressed the tragedy, extending condolences to the families of the deceased and expressing the community’s sorrow over the occurrence. He stressed that the thoughts and prayers of the community were with all those impacted by this devastating event.
The identities and ages of the deceased have not been disclosed by authorities pending notification of next of kin. The National Transportation Safety Board has taken charge of the investigation to determine the precise cause of the mechanical failure that led to the mishap.
Lynn University student Jared Scarpato, who witnessed the crash, indicated that the plane had been struggling with a rudder issue, making controlled landing attempts challenging. Scarpato observed the plane making multiple circles in an effort to land safely, but complications appeared to prevent a smooth descent.
The incident has led to significant disruptions in the area, with North Military Trail being sealed off between Northwest 19th Street and Butts Road. While the I-95 overpass at Glades Road was temporarily closed, it has since been reopened. The Tri-Rail Public Information Officer noted that train services were minimally affected, with buses deployed to transport passengers from impacted stations.
With ongoing road closures, local police advised drivers to avoid the affected parts of Boca Raton. Boca Raton Community High School assured parents and staff of the safety on campus despite the increased congestion and presence of emergency responders in the vicinity.
As the community reels from this event, the continuing investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board is expected to provide answers to the pressing questions about the specifics of the mechanical failures that led to this unfortunate crash. Meanwhile, local authorities and institutions are coordinating efforts to manage the impact on traffic and maintain public safety.
