BOCA RATON, Fla. — A tragic incident unfolded here Monday morning when a Cessna 310 aircraft, en route to Tallahassee, crashed shortly after takeoff from the Boca Raton Airport. The crash, which occurred at 10:12 a.m., resulted in the deaths of three passengers and left another individual injured on the ground.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials confirmed that the small plane crashed on Military Trail, west of Interstate 95 near the Town Center Mall. Following initial investigations, it was noted that the aircraft was attempting a return to the airport due to mechanical issues when it tragically descended onto nearby train tracks.
Eyewitnesses close to the scene described hearing a loud noise followed by shaking, before witnessing smoke rising from the wreckage. Local authorities responded promptly with emergency services rushing to the crash site.
Boca Raton Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Michael LaSalle detailed their swift action, explaining that the fire and police dispatch units were alerted immediately about the aircraft’s troubles, suspected to stem from mechanical failings. He confirmed that the plane crashed before any highway collisions occurred, although flying debris and fireballs did cause havoc on the surrounding roads.
In a particularly harrowing incident, one vehicle drove through a fireball resulting from the crash and subsequently collided with a tree, according to fire rescue officials. The driver survived but sustained injuries described as non-life threatening.
The National Transportation Safety Board has taken charge of the investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Meanwhile, local authorities refrained from immediately releasing the identities or ages of the victims.
Mayor Scott Singer expressed his deep sorrow over the event. “We are heartbroken by this tragic loss of life and extend our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who perished,” he said.
Further compounding the tragic day, a student from Lynn University, Jared Scarpato, reported seeing the plane repeatedly circling overhead before the crash. He noted that the flight crew had declared an emergency related to a rudder issue, seemingly struggling to regain full control for a safe landing.
The accident prompted significant traffic disruptions. The Boca Raton Police Department announced extensive road closures along North Military Trail, in addition to temporary closures over the I-95 overpass at Glades Road, which have since been reopened. Tri-Rail operations were also impacted, with alternative transportation such as buses being deployed to shuttle passengers between affected stations.
In light of the crash, Boca Raton Community High School assured that while all students and staff were safe, the nearby road closures and surge of emergency responders might delay routine transportation and increase local traffic congestion.
This air crash adds to the series of small aircraft accidents that raise concerns over air safety and mechanical integrity in private and smaller commercial flights, underscoring the continuous need for rigorous inspection and maintenance protocols. As the community mourns, the ongoing investigation is expected to shed light on broader issues that could enhance future aviation safety measures.
