plane crash survivors meet annually to commemorate rescue.

Mendoza, Argentina- The recent release of the Netflix adventure drama “Society of the Snow” was inspired by a real-life 1972 plane crash in the Andes. The disaster occurred when Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, carrying a rugby team from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Santiago, Chile, crashed into the Andes mountains, resulting in the death of 29 passengers. The survivors endured freezing temperatures, injuries, and an avalanche for 72 days before eventually being rescued.

The movie was based on Pablo Vierci’s book “Society of the Snow,” which includes first-person accounts from the 16 survivors. One survivor, Dr. Roberto Canessa, shared his memories of the crash, revealing the difficult and grim details of the experience. The film accurately portrayed the events, even filming on location at the crash site, allowing the actors and crew members to endure similar conditions to those the survivors faced.

After the crash, Canessa and teammate Nando Parrado hiked out of the mountain range for help. Despite the tragedy, the survivors have gone on to lead fulfilling lives – some have become authors, motivational speakers, and successful professionals in various fields.

The survivors have continued to meet annually to commemorate the day they were rescued. Their resilience and the bond they share have been a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Of the 16 survivors, 14 are still alive today, and many have found success in their respective fields. The story of their survival has continued to inspire people around the world, serving as a reminder of the power of perseverance and faith in the face of unimaginable challenges.
