PINOLE, Calif. — A Richmond man faces murder charges following an attack last month that resulted in the death of a well-respected former school principal. The incident, which occurred on May 28, has shaken the local community, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and legal authorities.
Miguel Patino, 27, is accused of murdering 68-year-old Vera Rowsey. Police were called to Bayfront Park around 2 p.m. after witnesses reported that two individuals walking a dog had been assaulted. Investigators later identified Patino as the primary suspect and arrested him, initially charging him with aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and elder abuse.
Following Rowsey’s death days later, authorities upgraded the charges against Patino to murder. Alongside the murder charge, he now faces two additional counts related to elder abuse, one for inflicting injury and another for causing death. During a recent arraignment, Patino pleaded not guilty to all the charges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 25.
The incident marks the first homicide investigation for the Pinole Police Department since February of the previous year. Rowsey was known for her long tenure as principal of De Anza High School in Richmond, where community members remembered her as a proactive and vital figure. Social media posts reflect a deep sense of loss, with one former student describing her as “one of the healthiest and most proactive women” they had known.
Authorities remain tight-lipped about the specifics of the attack, but they did confirm that another person accompanying Rowsey sustained injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Police expect to release further information regarding the ongoing investigation.
As this story develops, the community continues to mourn for Rowsey, whose impact on local education remains notable. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her tragic death continues, as law enforcement works to bring clarity and justice.
