Rideshare Driver Critically Wounded in Chicago West Side Shooting and Carjacking

Chicago, Illinois – A rideshare driver in Chicago was critically injured in a shooting and attempted carjacking in the city’s West Side neighborhood. The incident occurred late Wednesday night just after the driver had dropped off a passenger.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the 51-year-old Uber driver was approached by three men as he finished dropping off the passenger. The men demanded the driver’s phone and ordered him to exit the vehicle. When the driver refused, he was shot in the chest and then rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

This shooting comes amid an alarming trend of armed robberies targeting rideshare drivers in Chicago. Just a week before this incident, a Lyft driver was fatally shot during a robbery in the same neighborhood. The escalating violence has left both the rideshare community and the local residents concerned for their safety.

In response to these events, the Chicago Gig Alliance is calling for rideshare companies to implement stronger safety measures to protect drivers and passengers. The Alliance emphasizes the urgency of the issue, as the fear of becoming a victim of such violence continues to grow among rideshare drivers in the city.

As of now, no suspects are in custody in connection with the shooting. The Area Four detectives are actively investigating the incident. These recent events have further intensified the dialogue around safety and security within the rideshare industry, prompting a call for decisive action to prevent future tragedies.
