Route 17 Closed and Crashes Cause Chaos in New Jersey Towns

Ramsey, New Jersey – Route 17 experienced a series of incidents on Friday morning, causing road closures and traffic delays from Ramsey to Carlstadt. These incidents included multiple crashes and a water main break, leading authorities to detour traffic through the morning.

One of the crashes involved a stolen car and a downed utility pole, resulting in the closure of Route 17 in both directions near Saddle River. The crash caused a fire and telephone pole wires to cover the highway. The suspect in the stolen car has been taken into custody, according to Saddle River police. Utility companies promptly arrived to work on repairs.

The Ramsey Office of Emergency Management also alerted drivers to another closure on Route 17 south at Lake Street, which was expected to last for an “extended period of time.” This alert was issued following the tragic death of a 55-year-old pedestrian who was struck and killed while attempting to cross the northbound lanes of Route 17. The southbound lanes were affected by the crash but were reopened around 9:30 a.m., with no other injuries reported.

Additionally, a water main break on Route 17 south in Carlstadt caused further closures and traffic delays. The incidents prompted a wave of frustration among residents and commuters, with many taking to social media to vent and comment on posted traffic alerts.

The series of events on Route 17 serves as a reminder of the unpredictability and dangers of commuting, urging drivers to remain cautious and informed about road conditions.
