Battalion Chief Derek Roberts of the Lexington Fire Department emphasized the strict regulations, stating, “If it goes up, or it goes ‘boom’, it’s not allowed in Fayette County.” This clear directive aims to prevent potential harm due to fireworks that can pose risks to individuals and property in urban areas.
While sparklers are permissible as they stay on the ground, anything that explodes or creates projectiles is strictly prohibited under Fayette Co. ordinances. Sergeant Guy Miller of the Lexington Police Department highlighted the dangers of setting off such fireworks, warning that they could cause harm to anyone in the vicinity.
The enforcement of these rules is not taken lightly, with penalties in place for violators. The first offense within a 12-month period incurs a $250 fine, escalating to $500 for a second offense, and $1,000 for a third offense. These measures are aimed at deterring individuals from engaging in illegal fireworks displays that could endanger themselves and others.
Even seemingly harmless handheld sparklers can result in injuries, as noted by Chief Roberts. In the event of a burn injury, he advised using cold compresses, while for bleeding wounds, applying pressure until the bleeding stops. Despite precautions, accidents can still occur, underscoring the importance of exercising caution during festive celebrations.
With limited resources available to respond to every fireworks-related call, law enforcement officials urge residents to provide any digital evidence that could aid in identifying violators.
