Shooting Claims Life of 13-Year-Old in Detroit, Leaving Community in Shock

Detroit – A tragic shooting in Detroit claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy, while another boy of the same age sustained injuries late Friday night. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of East Lantz and Anglin streets, according to local police.

Three teenagers were walking in the area when a dark vehicle approached them. Authorities reported that a brief exchange took place between the teens and the occupants of the vehicle before shots were fired. One of the teenagers was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm.

Detroit Police Assistant Chief Franklin Hayes confirmed that the injured boy and the deceased were stepbrothers. Hayes expressed his sorrow, stating that as a parent himself, the tragedy resonates deeply within the community.

At this point, police have not determined whether the victims had any prior connection to the shooter. Investigators plan to interview the surviving boy and canvass the area for more information. They are also appealing to the community for any details that could assist in advancing the investigation.

This shooting highlights a distressing trend of violence involving minors in Detroit. In recent days, there have been multiple incidents raising alarms in the community. Just the day before this shooting, a 7-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy were hurt during a drive-by shooting while sleeping in their home on the city’s east side.

Additionally, a previous tragedy earlier this month involved a 6-year-old boy, Rylee Love, who was struck and killed by a stray bullet while inside his family home during a shootout nearby. Such incidents have sparked outrage among residents, prompting calls for action against escalating youth violence.

“This community is outraged; we are tired of this youth violence,” Hayes remarked, underscoring the emotional toll these events take on families and neighbors. The police department has urged anyone with information to come forward to help disrupt this troubling pattern.

Individuals with knowledge related to the incident are encouraged to contact the Detroit Police Department at 313-596-2260 or reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
