Shooting in 1100 Block of Lafayette Street Leads to 2 Arrests and 1 Fatality

HOUMA, Louisiana – On February 1st, 2024, the Houma Police Department responded to a shooting incident in the 1100 block of Lafayette Street. The officers found two victims, a 20-year-old male and a 14-year-old male, both suffering from gunshot wounds. They were taken to a local medical facility for treatment, but unfortunately, the 20-year-old victim, Terrance Scott, succumbed to his injuries. The 14-year-old is expected to recover.

The investigation revealed that the suspect, Terrance Simms, was an employee at the Terrebonne Parish Juvenile Detention Center. He had befriended the 14-year-old while working at the facility, and a conversation about the sale of a firearm took place after the juvenile was released. The meeting to finalize the transaction took place on Lafayette Street, where the tragic incident occurred.

After the shooting, Simms fled the scene but later turned himself in to the authorities and was taken into custody. He has been arrested for one count of 2nd Degree Murder and one count of Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, and is currently being held at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex. The juvenile was also arrested for one count of Attempted 2nd Degree Murder and is being housed at an out of Parish Juvenile Detention Center.

The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, and the police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 in cash if the information leads to an arrest.
