RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — In a tragic incident that unfolded in a gated community, police are pursuing first-degree murder charges against a 27-year-old man after he allegedly shot his girlfriend before turning the weapon on himself. The suspect, identified as Roberto Ernest Torres, remains in the Intensive Care Unit following the violent encounter.
Authorities responded to reports of gunfire around 6:25 p.m. Wednesday in the Thousand Oaks community. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals had sustained critical injuries. Torres and his girlfriend, 29-year-old Faith Nelson, were quickly transported to a local trauma center, where Nelson was pronounced dead roughly two hours later.
Witnesses reported that Torres and Nelson had been involved in a tumultuous two-and-a-half-year relationship, cohabiting in the same apartment. According to a security guard stationed at the entrance, the couple had been arguing in their vehicle right before the shooting occurred. Allegedly, after exiting the car, Torres shot Nelson multiple times before inflicting injuries on himself.
Family members revealed that the couple was at Thousand Oaks to meet Torres’ mother. The mother claimed to have received concerning phone calls from her son earlier in the day. Seeking clarity, she contacted Nelson; however, Torres intercepted the call, dismissing the situation and indicating they were at the gatehouse.
Upon arriving at the scene, the mother confronted Torres and Nelson about their situation. Reports indicate that Torres repeatedly downplayed the issue and boldly declared that he possessed a firearm. Moments later, gunfire erupted, prompting witnesses to flee the scene in fear.
Torres’ mother later informed detectives that Nelson had been considering ending the relationship, which may have contributed to the tensions leading up to the shooting.
Police officials confirmed through a probable cause affidavit that there is sufficient evidence to charge Torres with premeditated first-degree murder once he is stable.
