Minneapolis, Minnesota — A recent shooting in the city has left four people dead, escalating concerns about violence in the area. This tragic incident marks a devastating spike in gun-related fatalities, prompting urgent responses from law enforcement and community leaders.
Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting on Tuesday. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office has since identified them as 17-year-old Joseph Goodwin, 27-year-old Evan Denny, and 20-year-old Merelle White. A fourth victim, identified as 28-year-old Leras Rainey, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital on Thursday.
Police made an arrest in connection with the shooting, taking 34-year-old James Duane Ortley into custody on Thursday afternoon. Ortley was apprehended by an FBI SWAT team and the U.S. Marshals North Star Fugitive Task Force on the 1600 block of South Fourth Street. He faces serious charges, including three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of illegal firearm possession. Officials have indicated that another murder charge will be added.
“The impact of this violence is profound,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty. “It tears at the fabric of our community, leaving families shattered and neighbors affected both emotionally and physically.” She praised the investigative work of the Minneapolis Police Department, expressing commitment to using all available resources to combat further violence.
Court records reveal that Ortley has a history of felony convictions. His initial court appearance, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed to later this week. The police report indicates that all five victims from Tuesday’s incident suffered gunshot wounds to the head, found either inside or near a vehicle.
Witness accounts provide critical details about the attack. One surviving victim relayed that Ortley was the sole shooter, who fired upon all the occupants in the vehicle before fleeing the scene. Police have linked Ortley to street names identifying him in various past investigations.
Further complicating the situation, two additional victims have been identified in separate shootings across the city within 24 hours of the initial incident. Tiago Antonio Gilbert, 34, was shot on the 2100 block of 17th Avenue South, while Derrick Lamont Ewing, 51, was killed on the 3000 block of 15th Avenue South. As of now, law enforcement has not confirmed any connections between these shootings.
