Sneaker-Related Murder Trial Commences for Accused Man, George Walton

Florida City, Florida – The trial commenced on Tuesday for a man accused of involvement in the murder of a high school senior in April 2020 over a pair of Yeezy sneakers.

George Walton, who has pleaded not guilty, is facing charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder, and attempted robbery. The case involves the meeting between Walton and high school sweethearts Sergio Berben and Andrea Camps Lacayo at an abandoned house in Florida City. The couple had intended to sell Walton three pairs of sneakers from the Yeezy shoe line, valued at approximately $935.

According to court records, as the meeting unfolded, Walton requested to try on the shoes, but Berben insisted on receiving payment first. At that moment, a second man, Adrian Cosby, approached the vehicle and allegedly shot both Berben and Camps Lacayo.

During the trial’s first day, Berben recounted the harrowing experience of driving to safety after the shooting and calling for help. The prosecution presented Berben’s 911 call as evidence, in which he urgently requested assistance for Camps Lacayo.

Walton’s defense attorney, Alan Greenstein, contended that his client was not accountable for Cosby’s actions and should not be held guilty solely for being present at the scene. Meanwhile, Cosby is still awaiting trial and faces similar charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and attempted robbery.

While prosecutors argue that Walton was not the shooter, they maintain that he bears equal responsibility for the tragic events of that day. The trial is set to continue on Wednesday.
