South Loop Shooting Victim’s Family Calls for Justice and Awareness after Fatal Incident

Chicago, Illinois – A tragic incident unfolded in the South Loop neighborhood over the weekend, as a large gathering of teenagers turned deadly. The family of a teenager who lost his life in the shooting is now calling for justice.

The chaos erupted on Saturday evening near West Roosevelt and Canal streets, where around 200 teens had gathered. Chicago police, already in the vicinity, responded to shots fired just after 8 p.m. A 15-year-old boy was wounded in the leg but survived, while 17-year-old Jeremy Smith sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.

According to Jeremy’s family, he was attending a Facebook meet-up at the intersection when the tragedy occurred. Jeremy, a high school senior set to graduate this spring, was described as a decent individual who did not deserve his fate.

The grieving family is urging the community to come forward with information and for parents to verify their children’s whereabouts. They stress the importance of honesty and communication between parents and their children to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

In response to the incident, at least nine teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18 are facing criminal charges related to the gathering. While one individual was initially arrested in connection with the shooting, they have since been released without charges.

To assist with funeral expenses, Jeremy’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign. The community is rallying together to support the family during this difficult time and to seek justice for Jeremy’s untimely passing.
