Suspect Claims Innocence in Deadly Attack on Veterans Memorial Volunteer

SPARKS, Nev. — A 34-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the fatal beating of a 65-year-old volunteer at a local veterans memorial. Michael Paulsen faces serious allegations after his attack on Michael Hess, who succumbed to his injuries after being assaulted on November 3.

During a recent court appearance, Paulsen’s arraignment was conducted via Zoom, and he was not present for the proceedings. Following a request from both legal counsel and the court, the hearing was rescheduled to November 12. He is currently held without bail and is set for competency evaluations in District Court.

Authorities reported that surveillance footage captured the harrowing attack on Hess at the Veterans Memorial Plaza located at Sparks Marina. Witnesses described the incident as particularly brutal, with Paulsen allegedly kicking Hess and striking him multiple times in the head with a rock. Hess, a dedicated volunteer, was hospitalized but ultimately died from his injuries.

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks expressed a deep commitment to pursuing justice in this matter, stating the office would work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the case is handled properly. In a statement, he extended condolences to Hess’s family and friends, highlighting the community’s loss of a valued member.

In the wake of Hess’s death, Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza released a statement mourning the loss of their volunteer, emphasizing the profound impact the tragedy has had on the local community. The organization shared that a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to provide support for Hess’s family during this challenging time.

Paulsen’s initial arrest came shortly after the violent incident, which left Hess with severe skull fractures. Following his arrest, he was charged with murder resulting from a deadly weapon used against a vulnerable individual. As community members process the shocking event, the Sparks Police continue their investigation, encouraging anyone with information to reach out to law enforcement.

The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the next steps for Paulsen, while the community collectively mourns the loss of a man celebrated for his dedication to serving others.
