Sword-Wielding Man Fatally Shot by Pima County Deputy in Tucson Incident

TUCSON, Ariz. – Authorities have released video footage of a fatal shooting incident involving a sword-carrying man that occurred in Pima County on February 24. The Pima County Regional Incident Team unveiled the video on March 29, showcasing the events that led to the tragic outcome.

Devon Lewis, a 23-year-old individual, was the central figure in this unfortunate incident, losing his life at a hotel in the 4800 block of South Palo Verde Road. The PCRIT reported that a call to 911 alerted authorities to Lewis’ aggressive behavior, brandishing a sword in the parking lot.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department encountered Lewis standing outside with his sword sheathed. According to the PRCIT, a brief exchange took place between the deputies and Lewis, culminating in Lewis unsheathing his sword and charging towards the officers.

In response to the imminent threat, a deputy identified as Ramon Morales, a one-year veteran of the PCSD, discharged his weapon, fatally striking Lewis. Immediate medical assistance was administered by other deputies, although no further injuries were reported as a result of the altercation.

The PRCIT, in collaboration with the Tucson Police Department, spearheads an ongoing investigation into the shooting. Concurrently, the PCSD will conduct an internal inquiry to determine adherence to department policies. Once concluded, all findings will be submitted to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review.
