Teen Charged in Brutal Church Attack Tries to Harm Himself in Custody

Queens, New York – A 16-year-old suspect charged in connection to a violent attack and robbery outside Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Queens faces multiple charges, including assault, robbery, and grand larceny. The incident, captured on security camera video, shows the suspect throwing a 68-year-old woman from the top step as she was heading to Sunday Mass, causing her to suffer serious injuries.

After his arrest, the teenage suspect attempted to harm himself while in custody at the 107th Precinct, prompting officers to intervene before any serious harm occurred. Detectives worked diligently to gather evidence in the area of 152nd Street and 84th Road, leading to the arrest of the suspect just four days after the brutal attack.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed shock and outrage at the accused’s actions, describing the incident as a vicious and heartless act. The DA also alleges that the suspect had previously stolen a car from another female victim just days before the church attack, highlighting a pattern of criminal behavior.

Rev. Konstantinos Kalogridis of St. Demetrios condemned the attack, describing it as pure evil and expressing disbelief at the violence inflicted upon the victim. The family of the victim released a statement detailing her injuries, including a skull fracture and a black eye, noting that she was still fighting for her life in the hospital.

Despite the severity of her injuries, the victim showed signs of recognition, bringing hope to her family and community. Rev. Kalogridis visited the victim in the hospital, where he marveled at her resilience and survival, calling it a miracle. The family criticized existing laws regarding criminal recidivism while commending law enforcement for their efforts to ensure justice for the victim.

The community rallied around the victim, offering support and solidarity in the face of this senseless act of violence. With the suspect in custody, authorities are working to bring him to justice and provide a sense of closure and safety for the community. As the victim continues her recovery, her courage and strength serve as a beacon of hope and resilience in the wake of tragedy.
