Islamabad, Pakistan — The tragic shooting of 17-year-old Sana Yousaf, a popular social media influencer, has led authorities to open a murder investigation. Yousaf was reportedly shot in her home, prompting her family to file a complaint with local police.
The incident took place Monday afternoon, as described in a first information report (FIR) lodged by Yousaf’s mother, Farzana. She recounted that a man armed with a pistol entered their residence around 5 p.m. and fired at her daughter with lethal intent. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Yousaf succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
Sana Yousaf had gained significant attention on social media platforms, amassing nearly 800,000 followers on TikTok and close to 500,000 on Instagram. The FIR detailed how two bullets struck her in the chest, severely injuring her.
In her statement, Farzana provided a description of the assailant, noting his smart appearance and the black clothing he wore. She and her sister-in-law, Lateefa Shah, were present during the incident and have expressed confidence in identifying the shooter if he is apprehended.
While Yousaf’s brother was not at home during the attack, her aunt was visiting when the tragedy unfolded. This incident has raised concerns in a nation where acts of violence against women have become increasingly common, especially those engaged in social media.
This shooting mirrors troubling patterns seen in recent months. Earlier this year, a father admitted to killing his teenage daughter over her TikTok posts, angered by perceived moral transgressions linked to her online presence. Additionally, two men lost their lives in Lahore following accidental gun discharges, underscoring ongoing safety issues.
Pakistan is home to over 54 million TikTok users, making it a significant cultural touchpoint. However, the platform has faced repeated scrutiny from authorities, leading to bans over content deemed inappropriate. The video-sharing app has been temporarily blocked multiple times, particularly in 2021, although it remains operational with strict moderation policies in place.
As the investigation into Sana Yousaf’s murder continues, the community is left grappling with the reality of violent acts against public figures, particularly women, and the broader implications for the safety of social media users in the country.
