Gujrat, India — Severe storms over the past two days have resulted in at least 14 fatalities and 16 injuries across Gujarat, with the impact touching numerous districts, particularly in Saurashtra, Kutch, and central regions.
The storms unleashed a combination of rain, hail, and dust, affecting approximately 168 talukas. Official reports indicate that multiple incidents, including wall collapses and lightning strikes, contributed to the casualties. The districts most heavily impacted included Kheda, where five deaths were recorded, followed by Dahod with four, Vadodara with three, and single fatalities in Ahmedabad and Aravalli.
As wildlife also fell victim to the severe weather, a total of 26 animals were reported dead, with nine in Panchmahal and seven in Mahesana. In addition, infrastructure suffered damage, with at least seven homes affected—six in Panchmahal and one in Kheda.
Witnesses reported heavy rainfall in Rajkot, Jamnagar, and Devbhoomi Dwarka, accompanied by lightning strikes. Marble-sized hail and moderate rain were observed in various regions, with Kheda receiving up to 40 mm (1.5 inches) of rain. Several districts recorded more than 30 mm (1 inch) within a 24-hour period, highlighting the intensity of the storm.
In Ahmedabad, strong winds triggered a dust storm that preceded heavy rain on the evening of May 5. The winds, reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h (25 to 31 mph), caused the collapse of at least 46 trees and disrupt normalcy across the city. The India Meteorological Department has issued forecasts for continued rainfall in the affected areas.
Emergency crews continue to assess damages, and local authorities are urging caution as further severe weather is anticipated. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this natural disaster, the need for clear communication and safety measures remains paramount.
