Dublin, Ireland — A female tourist suffered severe injuries after an unexpected assault in broad daylight that authorities are calling gender-targeted. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on May 23, when the victim was approached and struck in the face without provocation by a man who then walked away calmly, according to court testimony.
Kevin Kletzander, 33, faces charges of assault causing harm after allegedly attacking the woman on Dame Street. Witnesses described the event as shocking, noting the assailant showed no remorse for his actions. The woman, who had recently arrived in Dublin, was left bruised and bleeding, sustaining a deep laceration on her temple along with significant swelling around her left eye.
During a bail hearing at Dublin District Court, Judge Catherine Ghent denied Kletzander’s request for release, citing concerns for public safety. Garda Niamh Dunne emphasized the unprovoked nature of the attack and the potential risk to other women if Kletzander were to be released. “I have huge safety concerns for any female he encounters,” Dunne stated.
The court was informed that Kletzander, who resides in a local hostel and has a documented history of mental health issues, did not display remorse at the time of his arrest. However, he reportedly expressed regret later when charges were presented against him. The police noted that CCTV footage could corroborate the events that transpired.
Dunne reported that numerous pedestrians were in the vicinity at the time of the assault, yet Kletzander continued to walk calmly toward George’s Street as the victim lay on the ground in shock. The attack has left lasting emotional distress for the tourist, who is concerned about potential scarring and the impact on her travel plans.
Defense attorney Noel Boylan argued that Kletzander has been engaging with mental health services and maintaining a routine that includes gym attendance and family contact. However, Dunne countered that Kletzander’s behavior during the incident raised significant alarm.
As the legal process continues, Kletzander was granted legal aid but has yet to enter a formal plea. He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 29, pending further directives from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
