NEW YORK — In a tragic incident Monday evening, four people, including a police officer, lost their lives in a shooting at an office building in Midtown Manhattan. The gunman, identified as Shane D. Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after unleashing violence with an M4 rifle inside the high-rise located at 345 Park Avenue.
Witnesses and surveillance footage revealed Tamura exiting his parked BMW shortly before 6:30 p.m. He was armed and proceeded directly into the building, targeting a uniformed officer who was working a private security detail. The ensuing chaos saw multiple individuals injured as the shooter continued firing indiscriminately in the lobby.
Among the deceased was 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a New York City police officer who served in the 47th Precinct. He was praised by Mayor Eric Adams for his commitment to the community and dedication to duty. “He represented the very best of our department,” the mayor stated, emphasizing Islam’s immigrant background and strong character.
Also killed were Aland Etienne, a 46-year-old security guard, and two employees of Rudin Management and Blackstone, identified as Julia Hyman, 27, and Wesley LePatner, 43. Hyman, a recent graduate of Cornell University, was noted for her academic excellence and dedication, while LePatner was remembered as a cherished member of the Blackstone team. Both companies expressed profound sorrow over their losses.
Another person, a 41-year-old NFL associate, was shot and hospitalized but is expected to recover. Authorities reported that Tamura carried a note suggesting he held the NFL responsible for a traumatic brain injury he believed he suffered, which might have influenced his decision to attack.
Following the shooting, local officials spoke out against the rising tide of gun violence. Governor Kathy Hochul described it as “a horrifying act” and stressed the urgent need for stricter gun regulations. She highlighted that while New York has some of the most stringent gun laws in the country, loopholes allow weapons to be brought in from states with weaker regulations.
Tamura’s vehicle was found with a loaded revolver, ammunition, and a backpack containing medication. He had a known history of mental health issues, and further investigation revealed he had traveled across the country before arriving in New York. His planned targets appeared to include the NFL offices located within the building, though he ultimately ended up on a different floor.
As the community mourns, vigils have been held to honor the victims, reflecting a collective grief over the loss of lives due to such senseless violence. The investigation continues as law enforcement seeks answers and delves deeper into the motivations behind this tragic day in New York.
