SEATTLE – A Seattle mother faces charges of second-degree murder following the death of her 14-year-old son, an incident that has sent shockwaves through the community. Denaya Young, 29, is accused of fatally beating her son after he allegedly failed to complete his chores.
The boy succumbed to his injuries on January 30, after enduring a harrowing three-hour assault. Court records indicate that Young became enraged over the chores, leading to the tragic outcome. The assault was witnessed by other family members, including the boy’s siblings and stepfather.
Tragically, the examination of the young teen revealed a staggering number of injuries, with the medical examiner reporting 1,172 marks, cuts, and bruises across his body. The examiner concluded that his death was the result of Sudden Inflammatory Response Syndrome, or distributive shock. This condition is caused when the body, trying to heal numerous injuries, diverts so much blood that cardiovascular support is compromised.
After the brutal event, Young waited approximately five minutes to call emergency services. Upon the arrival of authorities, she confessed to losing control of her emotions. According to the prosecutors, Young stated she realized her son was severely hurt as he repetitively fell but thought he was pretending.
During initial police interviews, Young admitted to not knowing how many times she had struck her son. “Every time he would stand up, he kept falling over but I thought he was bullshitting me,” Young reportedly told the police. This tragic case underscores issues such as the management of anger and the mechanisms of support available to struggling families.
Young’s detainment in King County Jail comes with a bail set at $3 million. She is scheduled for her next court appearance on February 13. Meanwhile, the community and local child protection agencies are reassessing methods to better protect vulnerable children and prevent such devastating incidents.
