THOMPSON, Pa. — A tragic confrontation unfolded in Susquehanna County on Thursday when a man fatally shot a neighbor and ambushed responding Pennsylvania state troopers. The incident, which left two troopers seriously injured, ended with the shooter being fatally shot by other officers.
The events began around 11:20 a.m. when troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins were dispatched to the scene on State Route 171, following a report of gunfire. Lori Wasko, 57, was allegedly killed by her neighbor, 61-year-old Carmine Faino, as she stood near her vehicle outside her home.
Upon their arrival, the troopers were immediately met with gunfire, with Faino shooting at them from a concealed position. Trooper Perechinsky was struck twice in the torso, while Trooper Jenkins sustained injuries to both arms. Their police vehicle was also struck by numerous rounds during the attack, which officers reported as showing a clear intent to harm.
During the ambush, an emergency medical technician also came under fire from the suspect, causing him to crash his vehicle. Fortunately, he survived, but the incident highlighted the intense danger first responders faced that day.
A rapid response from multiple law enforcement agencies established a perimeter around the area. Authorities reported that Faino, armed with a rifle and refusing orders to surrender, was ultimately killed in the exchange of gunfire.
State Police Colonel Christopher Paris praised the bravery of the injured troopers, noting that despite his serious injuries, Perechinsky managed to apply a tourniquet to Jenkins’s wounds, potentially saving his partner’s life. Both troopers were airlifted to nearby hospitals, where they remained in stable condition the same day.
“We’re incredibly fortunate that these two troopers survived,” Paris stated during a news conference. He affirmed the community’s support for the troopers, mentioning that their families and loved ones were in everyone’s thoughts.
Governor Josh Shapiro visited Perechinsky in the hospital later that day, commending his dedication and quick thinking during the incident. “Trooper Perechinsky saved lives today,” he remarked, emphasizing the exceptional service of Pennsylvania’s law enforcement.
The community responded with an outpouring of support for the officers. U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan and U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick both expressed their condolences, acknowledging the bravery of the injured troopers.
As investigators work to assess the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, the District Attorney’s office has indicated its involvement to ensure an objective examination of the use of force in the case.
This incident marks yet another chapter in a troubling trend, as these troopers are the fifth and sixth officers shot in the line of duty in Pennsylvania since the new administration took office in early 2023. The ongoing investigation remains a priority as the community seeks healing and answers following this harrowing event.
