Tragedy Strikes Enid Hospital: Officer Killed in Domestic Violence Incident Leads to Fatal Shooting

ENID, Okla. — A shooting incident late Sunday night at Integris Health Center resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including the suspected gunman. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, alongside local law enforcement, is actively probing the circumstances surrounding the event.

The violence unfolded shortly before 11 p.m. when officers responded to a domestic disturbance near East Walnut Avenue and North 12th Street, not far from the health center. Shortly thereafter, police traced the suspect’s vehicle to the hospital.

Upon arrival at the hospital, law enforcement located the suspect’s vehicle parked outside. As officers approached to engage with the suspect, he opened fire, striking at least one police vehicle. In a subsequent escalation, the suspect entered the hospital and discharged several rounds, fatally wounding a security officer. Enid police quickly intervened, confronting the suspect and shooting him dead inside the facility. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.

Hunter McKee from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation expressed relief that the incident did not result in further casualties. “We’re very fortunate that no one else was hit,” he stated, underscoring the prompt response from law enforcement that potentially prevented a more tragic outcome.

As investigations continued Monday morning, officers were seen examining the area, including the suspect’s car still parked at the emergency room entrance. Authorities have confirmed that there is currently no ongoing threat to the community.

Though details about the suspect remain limited, OSBI officials confirmed that he is male and are working to ascertain the reasons behind his hospital visit. The nature of the initial domestic call that triggered the escalation remains unclear.

The victim has been identified as J.W. Bode, a 72-year-old Public Safety Officer at the health center. Integris Health expressed deep sorrow over his loss, highlighting his bravery as he attempted to protect others during the incident. Described as a dedicated professional, Bode had spent five years at the facility after a lengthy career as a probation and parole officer. He is remembered as a devoted father and grandfather.

Counseling and support services have been made available for staff affected by the incident, as the hospital pledges to assist its employees during this difficult time. The Integris Health Center, located on Owen K. Garriott Road near Van Buren Street, remains operational, although the main entrance is temporarily closed while the investigation is underway.

Authorities continue to seek clarity on several unanswered questions, including more information about the suspect and the motives driving the tragic events. As the investigation unfolds, the community is left grappling with the shock of violence in a place meant for healing.
