Tallahassee, Fla. — In a tragic incident on Thursday, a gunman unleashed terror at Florida State University, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and the injury of several others. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, reportedly started firing near the university’s student union at around 11:50 a.m., moments after exiting an orange Hummer.
Authorities swiftly responded to the chaotic scene, where multiple individuals sustained gunshot wounds. FSU Police Chief Jason Trumbower confirmed that law enforcement officers engaged the assailant promptly, neutralizing and detaining him before further harm could ensue.
Among those tragically killed was Robert Morales, 57, who was employed as FSU’s dining coordinator. Morales was praised for his long-standing commitment to the university’s community. Also deceased was Tiru Chabba, 45, a father of two from Greenville, South Carolina. Chabba was working for a campus vendor at the time of the incident. Describing the profound impact of the loss, family lawyer Bakari Sellers conveyed the unimaginable grief faced by Chabba’s family.
The health status of the six wounded was addressed by Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, which noted all were stable upon arrival at their facility. Three of the wounded underwent surgery, and while most are showing improvement, one remains in fair condition with serious injuries.
The shooting suspect, Ikner, sustained injuries during the altercation and has been hospitalized in serious but stable condition. He faces charges including first-degree murder once medically cleared. Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil disclosed that Ikner, the stepson of a sheriff’s deputy, was no stranger to firearms as he had been part of the sheriff’s office youth advisory council.
No link appears to exist between Ikner and those targeted in the attack. Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell stated that officials are yet to ascertain a motive behind the horrific event. Furthermore, there appears to have been no forewarning or clear reason for the attack, as recounted by people who knew him.
Reid Seybold, a former classmate of Ikner’s at Tallahassee State College, recalled having to exclude Ikner from a political discussion group due to his extremist views, depicting a troubled background prior to the tragedy.
In addition to the chaos wrought by the shooting, another individual sustained injuries while escaping the scene, underlining the widespread panic that ensued. As details continue to emerge, the community and families of the victims begin their mourning process, compounded by the shock of such violence disrupting a place of learning and growth.
