Tragedy Strikes Las Cruces: Three Dead, Multiple Injured in Late-Night Park Shooting

Las Cruces, N.M. — A violent outbreak at a popular recreational venue turned tragic Friday night in Las Cruces, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries, local authorities reported. The incident, which unfolded around 10 p.m. at Young Park, left the community in shock as details continue to emerge.

The victims, who ranged in age from 16 to 36, were rushed to several medical facilities across the region, including all three local hospitals and the University Medical Center of El Paso. Andrew Cummins, a representative at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, confirmed that they received six patients via ambulance and private vehicles, five of whom were later transferred to the trauma center in El Paso for further treatment.

Among the deceased were two 19-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy. Authorities have withheld their names and the identities of the injured as investigations continue.

Authorities are scouring for clues and have appealed to the public for any videos or information that might lead to the identification of the assailants. The Las Cruces Police Department, along with multiple other agencies including the New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, and federal agencies such as the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are all collaborating on the investigation.

In the wake of the shooting, the area around Young Park was cordoned off and remained closed to the public into Saturday, disrupting normal activities and instilling unease across the community.

Local officials, including Las Cruces City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo, have expressed profound distress over the incident. Bencomo shared her grief on social media, reflecting on the prevailing anxiety that such a disaster might strike, despite hopes it would never happen.
