LEXINGTON, Ky. — A violent incident at a church in Kentucky left two women dead and two others injured on Sunday, following a chaotic series of events that began with a state trooper’s traffic stop. The suspect, who later opened fire at Richmond Road Baptist Church, was killed during the confrontation with police.
The disturbance started around 11:30 a.m. when a trooper, acting on alerts from a license plate reader, stopped a vehicle near Lexington’s airport. During that stop, the officer was shot, but he is now reported to be in stable condition. Following the incident, the suspect carjacked another vehicle and fled to the nearby church, approximately 16 miles from the location of the initial traffic stop.
Once at the church, the suspect opened fire, resulting in the tragic deaths of a 72-year-old woman and a 32-year-old woman, according to the local coroner. Two additional individuals were injured in the attack, one sustaining critical injuries while the other remains in stable condition after being transported to a local hospital.
Law enforcement later confronted the suspect, who was shot and killed by police at the scene. The suspect’s identity has not been released pending notification of their family. Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers indicated that preliminary investigations suggest a potential connection between the suspect and the church community.
As investigators work to understand the motivation behind this violent act, Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn noted that the church serves a small, close-knit congregation. The painful aftermath of this event has drawn emotional responses from local leaders, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who urged the community to pray for those affected and commended the prompt response from law enforcement agencies.
State Attorney General Russell Coleman echoed similar sentiments, describing the incident as an attack on both law enforcement and a place of worship, which has reverberated throughout the Commonwealth. “Today, violence invaded the Lord’s House,” he stated, emphasizing the community’s shock at the events that unfolded.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the shootings, piecing together the circumstances leading up to the tragedy. The community is left to grapple with the unexpected brutality that disrupted their peaceful Sunday, mourning the loss of two lives while seeking answers and support in the wake of violence.
