Lincoln University, Pennsylvania — A shooting incident during a homecoming celebration left one person dead and six others injured Saturday night, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and authorities as the investigation unfolds. Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe confirmed the death of 25-year-old Jujuan Jeffers from Wilmington, Delaware, during a Sunday press briefing.
The violent episode occurred just before 9:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the International Cultural Center, where a post-football game tailgate was taking place. Among the injured are a current student and a recent graduate of Lincoln University; the remaining victims, aged 20 to 25, are not affiliated with the institution but are expected to survive.
Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee expressed the shock of the community, stating that the event was expected to be a joyous occasion—a time for alumni to return and celebrate their experiences. “This was interrupted by gunfire that should not have occurred,” he remarked, underscoring the tragedy of the incident.
As investigations continue, authorities have detained a suspect, identified as 25-year-old Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson, also from Wilmington. He was arrested for carrying a concealed firearm without a license and remains in custody on $25,000 cash bail. While investigators believe there may have been multiple shooters, no further threats to the campus have been identified, and the school’s lockdown was lifted shortly after the event.
Lincoln University’s administration is cooperating with law enforcement and released a statement assuring the community that they are actively monitoring the situation. Classes will be canceled Monday to provide students and staff a day of healing and reflection, with campus counseling services available throughout the week. A gathering for community support is also planned.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as attendees fled in all directions following the shots. Some were injured by falling or being trampled in the panic. “It was surreal to see something like this happen in real life,” said Rocco Saienni, a bowling alley supervisor nearby that supported first responders.
Efforts to piece together evidence are underway, with investigators conducting a grid search of the area and reviewing video footage. Digital evidence will play a critical role in holding those responsible accountable. De Barrena-Sarobe urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, reinforcing the community’s role in the investigation.
As the Lincoln University community grapples with this tragedy, local leaders, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, have extended their support to the campus and local law enforcement. The heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over an event meant for celebration and reconnection, leaving many to reflect on the broader issues of safety and violence.
The investigation is being led by Chester County detectives, with assistance from the FBI, as authorities strive to bring clarity and justice to those affected by this devastating event.
