Veracruz, Mexico — Devastating rainfall has led to a tragic rise in fatalities across several regions of Mexico, with at least 47 confirmed dead and many others missing. As of Sunday, authorities reported that severe weather conditions, resulting from the remnants of tropical storms Pricilla and Raymond, have wreaked havoc on the country.
The downpour caused floods and landslides, predominantly impacting the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz, where 18 fatalities have been recorded. Neighboring Hidalgo, just north of Mexico City, reported 16 deaths, while the state of Puebla, located east of the capital, confirmed at least 12 fatalities. A child was among the victims in Querétaro, caught in a landslide, emphasizing the perilous nature of the ongoing crisis.
Authorities are currently searching for approximately 38 individuals who remain unaccounted for across three states affected by the severe weather. Approximately 259 towns in five states are isolated, cut off from essential services, roads, and communication. The floods have led to extensive property damage, displacing thousands and rendering homes uninhabitable.
In Poza Rica, Veracruz, residents faced unprecedented flooding, with water levels reaching nearly 12 feet due to the rapidly rising Cazones River. The torrential rains persisted from October 6 to 9, resulting in thousands of properties being affected and entire communities being submerged.
Humanitarian efforts are underway, with 146 temporary shelters offering food, medical care, and relief for over 5,000 displaced individuals. The Mexican government has deployed around 6,000 federal personnel to assist in cleanup operations and ensure access to local resources. Authorities have established air bridges to deliver necessities like food and water to remote areas still cut off from assistance.
Many residents remain without electricity and running water, intensifying the urgency of the situation. President Claudia Sheinbaum visited Veracruz, addressing the dire circumstances: “We know that there is a lot of desperation and worry. We’re going to get to everyone,” she assured.
