WASHINGTON — A tragic incident unfolded in Glover Park when a mother of three, Raven Edwards, was shot and killed in front of her children on Wednesday. Authorities have identified the 34-year-old victim, whose mother described the act as brutally shocking.
According to the police, the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Stephon Jeter, is believed to have targeted Edwards following the dissolution of their relationship. Edwards had reportedly sought to co-parent their three-year-old son without continuing a romantic connection, a decision that allegedly incited Jeter to violence. Edwards’ mother expressed heartache, revealing that her granddaughter, a 10-year-old girl who sustained injuries in the shooting, had always defended her mother.
Edwards was diagnosed with kidney failure last fall and was navigating the challenges of single motherhood when her life was violently cut short. The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. at their home on W Street, NW. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire, which left the community in shock and mourning.
Following the altercation, Jeter fled the scene with the couple’s three-year-old son, Million. Shortly after, the vehicle was located by law enforcement, leading to a pursuit that ended in a crash in Southeast Washington. Tragically, Jeter took his own life shortly thereafter.
The AMBER Alert issued for Million was lifted after he was located safe with his paternal grandmother in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Meanwhile, Edwards’ injured daughter has already been released from the hospital and reunited with her younger brother, who also witnessed the violence.
Community members expressed their heartbreak, describing the event as a profound loss. “It’s a complete tragedy,” said local resident Adriane Longhurst. “A family has been shattered, and it’s something that has left everyone in the neighborhood stunned.”
This tragic case raises concerns about domestic violence, especially as it affects young children who must navigate such traumatic experiences. As investigations continue, local advocates are highlighting the need for increased resources and support for families dealing with domestic abuse situations.
