Governor Ron DeSantis’s recent measures to address illegal immigration have prompted a Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States to issue a “travel warning” for undocumented immigrants visiting Florida.
LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens, held a virtual press conference where Domingo Garcia, the organization’s national president, highlighted the potential risks for immigrants and their families in the state. Garcia expressed concerns about the possibility of felony charges for individuals who bring undocumented friends or relatives to popular destinations in Florida, such as Disney World, Miami, or Universal Studios. He described Florida as a dangerous and unwelcoming environment for law-abiding citizens and immigrants.
In response to the new laws, LULAC announced a campaign to mobilize Florida residents against politicians who exploit illegal immigrants for political gain, pledging consequences for their racist, xenophobic, and fearmongering actions.
LULAC also vowed to take unprecedented action in Florida to combat Governor DeSantis’s deliberate targeting of immigrants by signing Senate Bill 1718. This bill imposes restrictions on undocumented migrant labor, eliminates community-funded programs that provide identification cards to undocumented immigrants, and increases penalties for those involved in transporting undocumented immigrants into the state.
Lydia Guzman, the chair of LULAC’s immigration committee, expressed concerns about racial profiling resulting from the new law and emphasized the potential denial of life-saving medical care to immigrants. She warned that the law’s repercussions could also negatively impact Florida’s thriving economy.
Guzman emphasized that laws solely designed to harass immigrants are detrimental to a state’s economy, as migrants may forego seeking necessary medical attention, potentially resulting in preventable deaths.
Governor DeSantis defended the bill and shifted the blame to President Joe Biden for failing to address the root causes of the immigration problem at the southern border, which continues to witness a humanitarian crisis. DeSantis argued that a different administration would have made it easier to tackle the issue effectively.
