Turn: Grandfather Stabbed to Death by Nanny During Welfare Check in Royal Oak

ROYAL OAK, Mich. — A tragic incident unfolded on Friday evening when an 83-year-old grandfather was allegedly murdered by a nanny while checking on his granddaughter. David Ong was summoned by his daughter to investigate after she lost contact with 35-year-old Samantha Booth, who had been caring for the 2-year-old.

The chilling events transpired around 7:50 p.m. at a residence on Sheridan Street. When Ong arrived, Booth reportedly attacked him, fatally stabbing him in the process. Concerned for his father’s well-being, Ong’s son was later instructed by the mother to visit the home after receiving no updates. Upon arrival, he heard noises emanating from the basement, which led him to investigate further.

As he descended the stairs, Ong’s son discovered his father injured and the toddler present. He quickly scooped up the child and attempted to escape while fending off Booth, who continued her assault. The chaotic scene saw them flee the home, with Booth reportedly brandishing a screwdriver. The uncle managed to get inside a neighbor’s house, where he called for help, all the while pursued by Booth.

Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore described the harrowing pursuit, noting that neighbors intervened as Ong’s son shouted for assistance. Police arrived shortly after, leading to a brief chase before apprehending Booth. Both the uncle and the young girl sustained minor injuries during the ordeal.

Authorities are still piecing together the grim circumstances surrounding the attack. Despite having known Booth for approximately two years and having previously entrusted her with their child without incident, the family is grappling with the events’ motivations. Moore indicated that drug use might be a contributing factor, highlighting the discovery of suspected substances, including psychedelic mushrooms and marijuana, in Booth’s possession, although it’s unclear if she was under the influence at the time of the incident.

Ong’s obituary paints a picture of a devoted family man, deeply loved by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Described as having a gentle spirit, he was celebrated for his unwavering support and faith.

In the aftermath of the incident, Booth faces serious charges, including first-degree murder and child abuse. Her arraignment faced disruptions after she allegedly refused to appear appropriately in court, prompting a private proceeding. Currently held without bond, she is scheduled to return to court on November 7 for further proceedings.

As the community mourns the loss of David Ong, questions linger about the circumstances leading to this senseless act of violence.
