HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A family is grappling with intense grief after a tragic courtroom incident resulted in the loss of both a life and the promise of justice. James Anderson, facing a guilty plea for the murder of his wife, ended his own life just moments before his court appearance. The case revolved around the death of Victoria Anderson, who was fatally shot in her Kingwood home in September 2023 while her young son was present.
Victoria’s parents, Roxie and Brad Fowler, are determined to honor their daughter’s memory while dealing with the aftermath of the heartbreaking event. They described Victoria as a loving mother and a talented individual who had a profound impact on everyone around her. “She lit up any room she entered,” Roxie said, reflecting on her daughter’s bright spirit.
The couple noted that Victoria, a proud Texas A&M graduate, had devoted herself to raising her 3-year-old son, BJ. “She gave him everything she had to create a loving home,” Brad added, emphasizing her dedication.
In the months leading up to her tragic death, Victoria filed for divorce in a bid to escape an abusive marriage, which her mother characterized as suffocating and controlling. “He would belittle and humiliate her, going so far as to monitor her actions through her devices,” Roxie recalled, detailing a toxic relationship laden with emotional and physical abuse.
Victoria’s parents attended court last week, hoping to ascribe accountability to their daughter’s killer. However, just before the anticipated guilty plea, investigators reported that James Anderson ingested a substance and was transported to a hospital, where he ultimately succumbed.
“I told my husband I wouldn’t believe it until he said the word ‘Guilty,’” Roxie said, recalling the frustration of not receiving closure. “He didn’t.”
Though justice remains elusive, the Fowler family is channeling their grief into positive action by establishing a scholarship in Victoria’s name through the Aggie Foundation. This initiative serves as a way to keep her legacy alive and ensure that her story continues to be told. “Somebody will always have to say her name when they award that scholarship,” Roxie stated, determined to honor her daughter’s memory.
As they navigate their loss, Brad reflects on what he believes Victoria would want them to feel. “If she could speak to us now, she’d say, ‘Don’t cry, Daddy. It’s going to be okay. I know you are taking care of each other. I’ll see you soon.’”
The Fowlers have taken on the responsibility of raising BJ, now six years old, and remain committed to preserving Victoria’s legacy in their everyday lives. Through sadness and determination, they are ensuring that Victoria is never forgotten.
