TURTLE MEAT TRAGEDY: Deadly Outbreak Linked to Delicacy on Zanzibar Island

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – A tragic incident unfolded on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago when several people fell ill or lost their lives after consuming sea turtle meat, a delicacy cherished by the residents. The outbreak resulted in the death of eight children and one adult, with 78 others being hospitalized due to chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning.

Dr. Haji Bakari, the medical officer in Mkoani District, confirmed that the victims had all ingested sea turtle meat, ultimately leading to the devastating consequences. The adult who passed away on Friday was the mother of one of the deceased children, highlighting the grave impact of the consumption of contaminated food.

According to authorities, this is not the first instance of such a tragedy occurring in the region. Previously, in November 2021, seven individuals, including a 3-year-old child, succumbed to similar poisoning after partaking in sea turtle meat, with three others requiring medical attention and hospitalization.

In response to the recent incident, a disaster management team led by Hamza Hassan Juma was dispatched to the area, urging caution and advising against the consumption of sea turtles to prevent further casualties. The situation serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers associated with consuming wildlife that may contain harmful toxins or substances.

The sorrowful events on Pemba Island underscore the importance of food safety and the need for increased awareness regarding the risks of consuming certain animal products. As investigations continue into the source of contamination and efforts are made to support those affected, communities are called upon to exercise vigilance and caution in their dietary choices to prevent future tragedies.

The devastating repercussions of ingesting sea turtle meat in Zanzibar highlight the critical role of public health measures in safeguarding individuals from foodborne illnesses and toxic exposures. As authorities work to address the crisis and provide support to those affected, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the need for stringent regulations and vigilance in food consumption practices to protect communities and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
